TGV INOUI, OUIGO or Frecciarossa: which one?
TGV INOUI (SNCF): most departures, most flexibility
The largest offer on the route. Luggage included, a bar car, on-board Wi-Fi and exchangeable tickets depending on the fare. Tickets go on sale about four months ahead, and SNCF Avantage railcards apply.
OUIGO (SNCF): cheapest if you travel light
SNCF's low-cost high-speed train. Tickets are released up to nine months ahead, and children under 12 pay a fixed €8 on OUIGO Grande Vitesse. The OUIGO PLUS option costs €9 more per journey; check what it includes when you book. Watch out: some departures use Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy instead of Paris Gare de Lyon.
Frecciarossa (Trenitalia): the Italian alternative
Trenitalia has run Frecciarossa trains between Paris and Marseille since June 2025. According to Trenitalia France, the route passed one million passengers in its first year, with a 97% satisfaction rate. Depending on the timetable, trains call at Lyon Saint-Exupéry TGV, Avignon TGV and Aix-en-Provence TGV. Several comfort levels are offered, from Standard to Executive, which makes it worth checking when comparing prices.
Our advice
- Tight budget, small bag: OUIGO, booked early.
- Business trip or need for flexibility: TGV INOUI with an exchangeable ticket.
- Specific departure time or best price: check Frecciarossa too, often competitive on the same slots.
How to pay less for Paris–Marseille
- Book early: up to 9 months ahead for OUIGO, about 4 months for TGV INOUI.
- Avoid peaks: Friday evenings, Sunday afternoons and the start of French school holidays are the most expensive.
- SNCF Avantage railcards: discounts on TGV INOUI for 12–27 year olds, adults and seniors.
- Compare all three: a comparison site shows SNCF and Trenitalia on one page.
- Consider other stations: an OUIGO from Marne-la-Vallée can be much cheaper if you are staying east of Paris.

Arriving at Marseille Saint-Charles
Saint-Charles station overlooks the city centre from the top of its famous grand staircase. Metro lines M1 and M2 leave from the station: M1 reaches the Vieux-Port (Old Port) in two stops. On foot, allow about 20 minutes to the Old Port via La Canebière.
Why 3 hours for 750 km: the expert's view
Almost the whole journey runs on high-speed lines: the LGV Sud-Est between Paris and Lyon, opened in 1981 as France's first high-speed line, then the LGV Rhône-Alpes and the LGV Méditerranée, opened to Marseille in 2001. Trains run at up to 300 km/h.
At these speeds, a driver can no longer read signals beside the track. Speed information is sent straight into the cab by the TVM signalling system, which splits the line into blocks a few kilometres long and tells the driver the speed to respect. On Paris–Lyon, France's busiest line, SNCF Réseau is preparing the switch to ERTMS Level 2, the European standard, to run more trains per hour.
Journey time mainly depends on stops: a non-stop train takes just over 3 hours, a train calling at Lyon Saint-Exupéry, Avignon TGV and Aix-en-Provence TGV takes longer.
