GoVolta, the Dutch open-access operator, has run no trains between Amsterdam and Berlin since Thursday 29 October, after emergency braking damaged one of its sets near Berlin. The company says service resumes on Friday 6 November with replacement coaches, six weeks before its new Amsterdam–Paris route opens.

The cancellations were first reported by the Dutch passenger site Treinreiziger and by SpoorPro on 2 November. On its own timetable page, GoVolta says trains 13427 and 328 will not run on 5 November because damage caused by the emergency braking must first be repaired. Passengers can rebook in My Booking or ask for a refund.

The problem is one of fleet depth. GoVolta runs refurbished I10 coaches bought second-hand from Belgium's SNCB, hauled by locomotives from Train Charter Services. Co-owner Hessel Winkelman told Treinreiziger that six spare coaches are normally enough to cover seven in service, but that this incident was exceptional. With one set out of use, the operator had no full train left for the daily Berlin run.

The disruption has also drawn criticism. The Dutch consumer association Consumentenbond told Treinreiziger that GoVolta appears to breach the EU passenger rights regulation on several points: passengers were not informed in time, were offered no alternative and were not told of their right to compensation.

The timing matters because GoVolta is about to double its network. From 14 December, the day after the annual timetable change, it plans a daily train from Amsterdam to Paris Gare du Nord via Rotterdam, Antwerp, Ghent, Arras and Amiens. Its published timetable shows train 80 leaving Amsterdam Centraal at 07:46 and reaching Paris at 14:54, and train 83 returning from Paris at 15:49 to arrive at 23:29. In mid-December the Berlin service is also due to rise from six to seven trains a week, according to the specialist newsletter Mobilithib, and GoVolta lists new Berlin-line stops at Hilversum and Apeldoorn from 13 December.

Both routes will draw on the same small pool of coaches. Running a second daily round trip, of more than seven hours each way, adds rolling stock to the rota, and we found no statement from GoVolta on how many spare vehicles it will hold once Paris opens. The Berlin episode shows what a single damaged set can do to a one-train-a-day operation: there is no later departure to fall back on, only the next day's train.
