Västtrafik orders 35 more Alstom Avelia Stream Nordic trains
Västtrafik has ordered 35 more Alstom Avelia Stream Nordic X80 trains, worth about €350 million, taking its future regional fleet in western Sweden to 80 units.
Västtrafik, the public transport authority for western Sweden, has ordered 35 more Avelia Stream Nordic trains from Alstom, bringing its future fleet to 80 units. Announced on 29 September 2026, the order is worth about €350 million and was placed as an option under an existing framework contract.
Built for 200 km/h and Nordic winters
According to Alstom, the three-car Avelia Stream Nordic, known in Sweden as the X80, has:
- a top speed of 200 km/h;
- 270 seats per train, step-free boarding and dedicated spaces for wheelchairs and pushchairs;
- real-time passenger information and regenerative braking;
- winter equipment allowing operation through 80 cm of snow and reliable running down to -40°C.
The design won a Red Dot Award in 2025.
First trains already in service
The first X80 units were delivered in spring 2026 and entered passenger service in the Västra Götaland region after several months of testing. Deliveries of the remaining trains will continue over the coming years, and Alstom will book the new order in the second quarter of its 2026/27 financial year. Alstom already maintains Västtrafik's fleet, including older rolling stock.
"With these 35 new trains, we are taking another step towards more modern, spacious and comfortable public transport," said Bijan Zainali, Chair of the Västtrafik Board. Maria Signal Martebo, Managing Director of Alstom Sweden, called the order "an important new step in Västtrafik's fleet modernisation programme".
TrainsNews analysis
Exercising a large option only months after the first trains entered service is a strong signal of confidence in a new train family. The Avelia Stream platform is also gaining ground elsewhere: it was chosen by Virgin for its planned cross-Channel service. For regional authorities in the Nordic countries, the decisive criteria are winter reliability and capacity on busy commuter corridors rather than top speed alone.
