How train delay compensation works
In Great Britain, most operators run Delay Repay: you can claim from 15 or 30 minutes late depending on the company, up to the full ticket price after 2 hours, within 28 days. In the European Union, Regulation 2021/782 sets a floor since 7 June 2023: 25% of the fare from 60 minutes late at arrival and 50% from 120 minutes. Many operators go further, such as SNCF's G30 guarantee in France (from 30 minutes) or Renfe in Spain (up to 100%).
Delay is always measured at the final destination on your ticket. For a connecting journey on a single ticket, what counts is the delay at the end. Under EU rules, compensation is not due for extreme weather or natural disasters, but strikes by the operator's own staff do not count as exceptional circumstances.
Good habits
- Keep your ticket and note your actual arrival time.
- Claim quickly: 28 days in Britain, 90 days for SNCF G30, 3 months for Eurostar and Renfe.
- Ask for cash where possible: EU law gives you the right to money on request.
- Season-ticket and pass holders have their own rules: check the operator's page.
