Frecciarossa or Italo?

Both companies run high-speed trains on the same line. The choice comes down to price, departure time and station.

Trenitalia's Frecciarossa is the national operator's high-speed brand. On our sample day, the first direct train left Roma Termini at 07:00 and the last at 22:50, with 48 departures in between. Some trains run on to Salerno, and Trenitalia lists a Rome – Naples Afragola – Salerno – Reggio Calabria route.

Italo is a private company. It serves both Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina, and both Napoli Centrale and Napoli Afragola. Its classes are Smart, Prima Business and Club Executive. Italo advertises a Rome to Naples time of 1 hour and fares from €14.90.

Our advice: compare both for your exact time. A ticket bought from one company is not valid on the other's trains. If you miss your Italo train, you cannot board the next Frecciarossa with the same ticket.

How to pay less

Book early. Both companies sell their cheapest fares weeks ahead, and prices rise as trains fill up.

Shift your departure. On 10 November 2026, the 09:15 Frecciarossa started at €22.90, while the 09:25 started at €18.90 and arrived five minutes sooner.

Check both operators. Italo's lowest advertised fare on this route is €14.90.

Know your fare rules. Trenitalia's Base fare can be changed any number of times before the train leaves, and once more up to one hour after departure. Check the conditions of cheaper fares before you buy.

Stations: Termini, Tiburtina, Centrale and Afragola

Roma Termini is Rome's main station, served by both companies. According to Italo, it has 32 tracks and handles about 850 trains a day. It connects with the metro, trams, buses and taxis. Roma Tiburtina, in the north-east of Rome, is also served by Italo and can be reached by metro line B, bus or tram.

Napoli Centrale stands on Piazza Garibaldi. Italo describes it as one of Italy's largest stations, with 23 tracks and around 390 trains a day.

Napoli Afragola is a high-speed station north of the city, opened in 2017, served by Italo and by many Frecciarossa trains, including those running on to Salerno and Calabria. On 10 November 2026, most of the Frecciarossa trains we checked reached Afragola from Roma Termini in 55 to 58 minutes, and the fastest in 53.

How to book

Buy Frecciarossa, Intercity and regional tickets on trenitalia.com, and Italo tickets on italotreno.com. You can also compare both with the search box at the top of this page. High-speed tickets carry a seat reservation and are tied to one train.

Luggage and life on board

Italo lets passengers bring their luggage for free, with no limit on the number of items. Overhead racks are limited to 53 cm in height and 42 cm in depth, so larger cases go in the luggage areas at the end of each coach.

Trenitalia offers a door-to-door option called Bagaglio Facile, run with Zyppy. The first item costs €22 between Easy Luggage locations, then €20 for each extra item, with delivery within 24 to 48 hours (rates read on 28 October 2026).

On board the Frecciarossa, the FrecciaPlay portal works over the train's Wi-Fi and offers entertainment, internet access and travel information. Trenitalia also lists catering, cleaning during the journey and a copy of the FS group magazine at each seat.

Arriving in Naples: Pompeii and the coast

The official Pompeii archaeological park lists three train options from Naples. The Circumvesuviana Napoli – Sorrento line stops at Pompei Villa dei Misteri, close to the Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra entrances. The Circumvesuviana Napoli – Poggiomarino line stops at Pompei Santuario, for the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance. Trenitalia's Napoli – Salerno trains stop at Pompei station, where the Pompei Link train and bus service reaches the park in about 15 minutes.

For Sorrento, the same Circumvesuviana line runs to the town. Italo presents Naples as the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, and its trains link Naples and Salerno in 35 minutes.

The expert's view: one of the first ERTMS Level 2 lines in Europe

The Rome–Naples high-speed line holds a special place in European signalling history. Alstom says it was the first to put its radio-based ERTMS Level 2 system into service, on the Rome–Naples line, in December 2005. Train control no longer depended on lineside signal lights: the information the driver needs reaches the cab by radio.

The infrastructure manager RFI confirms the scale of that choice. In a 2019 presentation, it listed Roma – Napoli among its high-speed lines equipped with ERTMS/ETCS Level 2, Baseline 2, without fallback. In plain terms, there are no lineside signals behind ERTMS on these lines to take over. RFI gave 300 km/h as the operational speed on these lines, with up to 300 trains a day and a real headway of 5 minutes between trains.

ERTMS has been in commercial service on the line since December 2005. RFI says the new Turin – Milan – Naples – Salerno high-speed network has been fully operational since 2009.

Work continues around Naples on the new Napoli – Bari high-speed line. The Italian transport ministry put its cost at about €5.8 billion in May 2023 and aimed for completion in 2027, with Bari to Naples in 2 hours and Bari to Rome in 3 hours. In July 2026, RFI announced closures between Napoli and Cancello in August to prepare the new Casalnuovo station on that route.
