North Africa's railways are mostly run by integrated national companies that manage both the network and the trains: ONCF in Morocco, SNTF in Algeria and SNCFT in Tunisia. ONCF opened Africa's first high-speed line, Al Boraq between Tangier and Kenitra, in 2018.

How rail is organised in the region

Big projects are often led by dedicated agencies. In Algeria, ANESRIF plans and builds new lines that SNTF then operates. In Egypt, the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) leads the Cairo Metro and the new high-speed network, while Egyptian National Railways (ENR) runs the conventional network.

The table also covers Mauritania's SNIM iron-ore railway and Sudan. Libya has no railway in service today.

Infrastructure manager or train operator?

An infrastructure manager (IM) owns or runs the network itself: track, bridges and tunnels, overhead lines, signalling and telecoms. It maintains and renews these assets, allocates capacity (train paths) to railway undertakings and leads major works and their tenders.
