Asia has the world's largest rail networks and the widest range of models. In China, China State Railway Group manages and operates a network that includes the largest high-speed system on the planet. Indian Railways remains an integrated government body, alongside dedicated companies for major projects: DFCCIL for the freight corridors and NHSRCL for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed line.

How rail is organised in the region

Japan follows its own model. Since privatisation in 1987, regional JR companies own and operate both their lines and their trains, while the public agency JRTT builds and owns some of the newer Shinkansen lines. In Southeast Asia, new managers have appeared with recently built lines such as the Laos–China railway and the Jakarta–Bandung high-speed line.

In Oceania, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) manages Australia's interstate network, alongside state-run networks, and KiwiRail manages New Zealand's network. Both regions share this page because Oceania has only a handful of managers.

Infrastructure manager or train operator?

An infrastructure manager (IM) owns or runs the network itself: track, bridges and tunnels, overhead lines, signalling and telecoms. It maintains and renews these assets, allocates capacity (train paths) to railway undertakings and leads major works and their tenders.
