Adif Launches €6M FRMCS 5G Railway Pilot Project
Spain's Adif invests €6 million in FRMCS, a next-generation 5G communication system for railways, launching a pioneering pilot project across its network.
Adif revolutionizes railway communications with its next-generation FRMCS system.
Strategic €6 Million Investment
Adif, the Spanish railway infrastructure manager, has awarded a contract worth approximately €6 million to launch the first phase of a revolutionary pilot project. This initiative focuses on the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) and the Adaptable Communication System (ACS).
This pilot project constitutes a key element of the broader FP 2-R2DATO project, one of six "flagship" first-generation projects under Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking (ERJU), of which Adif is a founding member.
Test Location and Contract Scope
Strategic Testing Location
The initial tests for these advanced systems will take place on a 25 km stretch between Asunción Universidad and Matallana, located on the metric-gauge León–Guardo line.
| Project Element | Specification |
|---|---|
| Investment | €6 million |
| Test distance | 25 kilometers |
| Pilot line | León-Guardo (metric gauge) |
| Technology | FRMCS based on 5G |
| Framework project | FP 2-R2DATO (ERJU) |
Infrastructure and Equipment
The awarded contract covers essential infrastructure works including:
- Construction of towers and masts
- Installation of cabins and cabinets for mobile telecom equipment
- Fiber optics deployment
- Power supply systems
- IP equipment and subsequent maintenance
Technological Advancements and Future Prospects
From GSM-R to 5G Railway
The FRMCS system is based on 5G technologies and is designed to overcome the limitations of the current GSM-R system, which relies on obsolete 2G technology.
The implementation of FRMCS is expected to enable advanced capabilities:
- Faster and more secure communications
- Real-time supervision
- Predictive maintenance
- Automatic Train Operation (ATO)
- Advanced digital services
Phase 2: Concrete Deployment
Following this foundational infrastructure phase, Phase 2 will involve the concrete installation of the FRMCS system. This subsequent phase will be conducted within the framework of the European project FP2-MORANE-2, coordinated by UIC and financed by ERJU.
European Impact and International Collaboration
Europe's Rail Partnership
This initiative aligns with the global strategy of Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking, bringing together:
- European infrastructure managers
- Specialized manufacturers
- Research institutes
- National railway authorities
The FP2-MORANE-2 project benefits from Adif's participation alongside other European managers and manufacturers, creating a collaborative innovation ecosystem.
Digital Transformation of Spanish Rail
Communication Modernization
This significant investment underscores Adif's commitment to modernizing railway communications and aligning with European rail innovation objectives.
The transition to FRMCS 5G will enable:
- Enhanced safety of train operations
- Optimized operational performance
- Reduced maintenance costs
- Preparation for autonomous trains
Timeline and Next Steps
Infrastructure works are scheduled to begin soon on the pilot section. Installation of 5G railway equipment will follow in Phase 2.
This project positions Spain as a pioneer in adopting 5G railway technologies in Europe.
