Amtrak Launches Historic Procurement for 800-Plus New Long-Distance Railcars Across 14 Routes

Amtrak on April 15, 2026 formally issued its largest-ever Request for Proposals (RFP) for a new long-distance train fleet, covering more than 800 railcars across 14 national routes.

 A once-in-a-generation fleet renewal programme

The national passenger rail operator has invited rail vehicle manufacturers to submit bids for a fleet of over 800 new single-level railcars, intended to replace equipment that in many cases is approaching nearly five decades of service. The RFP was developed in close coordination with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and marks the transition from a mixed fleet — currently comprising both single-level and bi-level cars — to a standardised single-level configuration across all long-distance routes.

Routes in scope include some of Amtrak's most iconic long-distance services: the California Zephyr, the Empire Builder, and the Southwest Chief, among eleven others spanning the continental United States.

Modernised passenger experience, with a supplier decision by 2027

The new fleet specification calls for modern seating, enhanced private sleeping compartments, improved dining options, and updated onboard amenities. Amtrak stated that fleet standardisation will reduce operational complexity, broaden competition among potential carbuilders, and accelerate the replacement timeline.

Amtrak expects to complete its technical, financial, and operational review and announce a selected supplier by the end of 2027. First deliveries are anticipated to follow in the early 2030s, with full deployment across all 14 routes targeted before the mid-2030s.

federal backing and a renewed commitment to intercity rail

This procurement follows Amtrak's February 2026 strategic announcement outlining its Long Distance Fleet Replacement Strategy, itself building on federal infrastructure investment commitments. A new Pacific Surfliner daily service connecting Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo launched on April 6, 2026, underscoring the operator's broader push to expand and modernise its network ahead of fleet renewal.
